• Williams Indiana Jones CPU Grounding Screw Size

Anyone know the size of the grounding screws used to fasten the boards on a Williams IJ? Specifically after the screws with the locking washer used to ground the main CPU board but I think all the screws used in the back box might be the same size? Are they the 6-32 x 1/4 with locking washer screws? Thanks.

They are 8-32 x 1/2" SEMS screws with external lock washers; 3/8" might work, 1/4" is too short to hold the boards securely. Original part number 4008-01017-08, substitute 4008-01003-08.

I would add to Tony's comment that in restoring many Williams WPC games, I have found the threads in the backbox metal shielding plate these screws go into are often stripped. This causes you to look for larger screws but they won't fit if you go one size up with machine threaded screws. It isn't a purist solution, but I've substituted sheet metal screws of the same size with success.

You can make your own SEMS Screws with attached washers by forcing
a smaller lock washer onto the screw.

    Use 8/32 screws and a 6/32 washer.
Use a screw driver and pliers to hold the washer
whlie screwing the screw through the washer.

Or just buy separate washers and screws.

    8-32 1/2" SEMS ... Hmmm
Wondering if these will work for Data East/Sega games and System 11.
    I would think so.
Always missing screws on DataEast boards since you have to take out completely and can easily drop some. Wms Sys11 too, actually.

The picture they posted on their website is wrong. The screws at that link actually are indeed external tooth lockwashers and I have ordered thousands of those screws from them. I use them also on Data East and Williams system 11 games. On system 11 machines the factory had a tendency to overtighten the screws and strip the threads of the screws. That's why any system 11 machine I work on gets all new board mounting screws that I hand tighten with a screwdriver and not a screw gun.

Hey Ken, did you ever find replacement standoff 'nuts' - those odd metal
U shaped clips that Williams used for their PCB mounts? Not that I have
spent much time looking, but they would be handy to stock...

The standoff clips are Williams part 20-9534; they were probably a special production for Williams as I was never able to find a supplier. Similar parts were used in PCs back in the day, don't know if they still are. If you're desperate for some of the originals, Pinball Spare Parts Australia shows them in stock (from their buyout of IPB parts probably).

Modern Stern uses the 3/8" long ones. Old Data East would use the 1/2" long ones.

John Robertson: No, I never bothered looking for the U shaped clips. It would nice to find some of those now that you brought it up. I've seen several machines with those clips corroded either from poor storage or leaky batteries.
