• Original NIB pinball prices from the 1970s

    From David Marston@pub@GoldenMusicNH.com to rec.games.pinball on Monday, April 06, 2020 18:07:37

I recently found some old distributor newsletters that I had
saved. Many just tout the latest games and jukeboxes, but
some quote prices. I know the original manufacturer-suggested
prices are of great interest; here you go. Keep in mind that
this was a time of rampant inflation.

The date shown is the month on the newsletter.
All prices in US dollars, FOB Chicago.
All games are 4-player unless annotated "1p" or "2p".
All games are EM unless annotated "SS".

    Gottlieb Sky Jump 1p $705

Big jump from EM to SS with Bally's EK in 1977... however that's where the smart money went to at that time.

Sorry if this was unclear. Each dateline applies to the following lines,
up to the next dateline. For example, the 1975-11 means I got the
newsletter in November, 1975. At that time, the current games they were
selling were Blue Max for $1095, 300 for $1095, etc. The only August
1977 prices are the ones under 1977-08.

I'm apologize, you are quite correct.

I really should have read it more closely - you did say each was a
separate newsletter... gah. All I can say in my defense (shabby) is you
might have put it like this:

    Pricing Newsletter - 1974-03
    Gottlieb Big Indian $975
    Gottlieb Sky Jump 1p $705

    Pricing Newsletter - 1974-06
    Gottlieb Big Brave 2p $855

    Pricing Newsletter - 1975-11
    Chicago Coin Blue Max $1095
    Gottlieb 300 $1095
    Gottlieb Top Score 2p $995
    Gottlieb Abracadabra 1p $895

Then someone as thick as I might have figured it out, or maybe not.
There are days when I am just not very clever.

The list is even more interesting with your pointing out it is dated
    when the games were new.

    Thanks!

I wonder what Atlantis went for new?

Inflation was bad enough in those times that each successive
game with a particular number of players would get a $40-ish
price increase. The successive one-player games between the
two bracketing games shown are: Sky Jump, Top Card, Atlantis,
El Dorado, Spin Out, Abracadabra. The $190 increase can be
divided among the five steps of the succession to come out
with a mix of $35 increases and $40 increases. Therefore,
Atlantis was probably $775 to $785. I operated all those games
but the distributor invoices are long gone.

I got into distribution sales in 1982. I remember selling Bally 8 Ball Deluxe Limited Edition for $1795.00 to our best customers. So a $250.00 increase from 1977.

I helped unbox a lot of games back in 1976 - 77 & all of the games came from Brady, Most EMs were between $1000.00 & $1200,00 & that was buying 3 or 4 of each game.
Starting with the SS Ballys prices jumped to $1500 - 1600.
Back then Jimmy Carter was President & interest rates were at 21% & things were hard ( for us anyway ), But Pinballs were getting the heck played of them until Pacman came along & the rest was history.
