The gears can be lightly lubricated with a Teflon-based lubricant, something like DuPont's "Non-Stick Dry-Film Lubricant" with Teflon; avoid "wet" lubricants (like oils). Radio Shack used to sell a tube of Teflon-based lubricant gel that worked great.

I think DuPont is completely out of the retail business? Heck, DuPont
barely exists anymore. [Former DuPont employee here.]
Since Teflon is a trademarked name, anything called Teflon would have
the DuPont (Chemours now, a spin off of DuPont) lubricant in it.
I use this: Finish Line Lubricant Teflon Squeeze

Stay away from any of the 'cleaning' bicycle Teflon lubricants. They generally have a wax in them to clean the dirt off of bicycle chains.
Might want to clean off the gears completely with 91% isopropyl alcohol
first to remove any gunk or wet lubricant a previous owner misapplied.

The generic name of Teflon is polytetrafluoroethylene.
