Well this is an old post but I gotta ask, does anyone make side rails. The originals on my F2K were some sort of plastic wrapped wood thingys.
Any body know a guy that knows a guy?
    Thanks

Anyone know what type/species of wood was used on late 70's Bally's?

    Thanks!

    Hi Kurt,

Well, some hardwood would be nice, I'd bet on oak or similar...in the
40s and 50s oak was used for legs and glass rails.

I'd go with what Bryan said. All the Bally's I took off appeared to be Poplar, maybe a pine here or there. You could use just about anything however if you want to use oak it's a pia to get the grain to fully disappear. Tim - Stillwater

    Kurt, There is a guy...
    See TaylorVA on Pinside: https://pinside.com/pinball/forum/topic/oak-replacement-playfield-rails-wh2o-and-taf-ready-to-ship-or-york/page/19#post-5604735
Ask him if he has the F2K Rail templates, If not you may need to send him your old rails.
Also I made rails for my Pharaoh from 1/2"x4 oak stock from Home Depot, It's in the hobby wood section/aisle. I used 1/2x4" so i could run it through the Joiner to get it straight, and then rip down on the table saw to 1-1/8". Then clear. Looks pretty much the same as the Plastic wrapped pine form Williams, Only stronger /better. Note , you need to get the pilot hole diameter for the screws right,as the oak is unforgiving. it's easy to break the heads off the
    screws.

A poster on Pinside recently wrote about getting new side rails for his K&Q resto. He reported that his son's significant other enjoys woodworking and made him some from maple stock. Other wood stock might be available. Maybe worth a try if TaylorVA cannot accommodate.

I've got Reese Rails on my EM Mata Hari... highly recommend:

they are spot on perfect and are very high quality... oak.. hard as nails and sprayed a perfect color match.

On many EM games those rails appear to be maple, with either shellac or lacquer as the finish. No stain. All the wood legs I've seen were oak. The side rails were not oak, the grain of oak is much larger than that on the side rails.
