When we moved here about 18 months ago, I first found that my only option was a local 20 Mb ISP. Then a new ISP showed up with up to 1 Gig speeds! Now the 20 Mb guy has been running underground fiber in my neighborhood and advertising 1 Gig speeds! We're moving up!

BTW, haven't seen any gators yet! :)

With formerly using 3 MB download speed with CenturyLink DSL...dropped it for this TMobile with 70-80 MB according to the time of day...thought CenturyLink would upgrade their DSL service to at least 20 MB...but no. They are still at 3 MB and will continue staying that way because of this being a "rural" area.

BTW, haven't seen any gators yet! :)

Just remember...as was said in "Live and Let Die"...you can take care of the gators by either pulling their teeth out with your bare hands or poke a pencil/pen in the back of the head. ;)

It was a similar situation when we moved into our current neighbourhood, the newer areas had fibre direct to the home while on my street (still new, but not new enough) has DSL & cable connections. It's been 10 years and they still haven't brought fibre direct to our house yet.

It's not really a big concern though as we have the cable internet and get gigabit down (w/ 30Mb up), but symmetrical gigabit would be pretty sweet.

Well I'm sure there are a ton a retro folks right here. You might have missed the dumpster diving conversation that was going on for a couple months. What are you in to?

I caught the end of that one - was an interesting read.

I guess my favourite retro machines are the BBC's, for no other reason than they are what we had at school and what I used most back then.

These days I'm interested in exploring pretty much anything 8-bit - I picked up an SVI-328 maybe 6 months back and have had some fun poking around with that. I have a C64 I'm just about to play with - never had one as a kid - just fixing the PSU on that one. Once it's working I'll have to see if one of the floppy drives works...

Beyond 8-bits I've got a couple of Atari ST's and an Amiga 500.

One day I'll find an old XT or AT - might even build something new from one of the homebrew PC projects. I do have a homebrew CP/M machine I must finish putting in a case.

Like most people I expect, I regret tossing away the various machines I had in my earlier years. The Acorn Electron, the Osborne Executive, the Unitron 2200 (Apple 2 clone), the TRS-80, the XT, the various 286/386/486's... My brother's Amiga 1000 with sidecar (that he got rid of)... There's probably a couple more I've forgotten.

Of course there's a bunch of machines I'll acquire as money permits - TI99/4A is oddly interesting to me, as are the Australian Microbee's, an Apple ][GS (we had one at college and it interested me for some reason), a C128 is on the list, as is an Acorn Electron, maybe a Commodore PET (not that common around here), and any of the older CP/M machines. An Acorn Archimedes would be a nice addition too. One day :-)

Hey guys, I just went through the setup and as it turned out ended up chatting with Digital Man the sysop of Vertrauen and I believe the owner of DOVE-Net... here are a couple of notes...

    1) Make sure you set the DOVE-Net msg bases to 'Networked' not 'local'... this is not mentioned in the forum article and will prevent the tagline from working correctly even though you will be able to send and receive msgs.

    2) Make sure you use this article for the further details... https://wiki.synchro.net/network:dove-net ... you will need this for the msg base id's and permissions for the forums, etc...

Well I can tell you not to waste your time with floppies. There is an emulator software for the PI. Thats the way to go. You can just emulate the drive and use the TOSEC. I think its up to 5000 plus images for the C64. I also have one for the AMIGA 1200 I have. Floppy emulators were a must have for any retro nerd.

I have 2 C64s and the A1200. Had a 500 but after begging and pleading I traded it to someone that didn't have any retro gear. Only kinda regret it. Had a few CD32s and the SX1 which basically made it an A1200 so didn't mind trading those away. Only system I really regret is not keeping my first PC which was a 486 SX20. I learned so much from that machine. Pretty sure it just got tossed once my mom didn't want it anymore. Should have said I want it but what are you going to do now?

Yes he does - I watch pretty much all of his videos, and support him on Patreon.

As far as I know, my C64 should work - I hope so at least, as unlike Adrian I don't have a tray of spare PLA's, SID's, CIA's, VIC-II's, and so on :-( One day maybe, LoL.

Well I can tell you not to waste your time with floppies. There is an emulator software for the PI. Thats the way to go. You can just
emulate the drive and use the TOSEC. I think its up to 5000 plus images for the C64. I also have one for the AMIGA 1200 I have. Floppy
emulators were a must have for any retro nerd.

I agree, although I still like the old floppy drive. Memories...

I've got a couple of Gotek's kicking around, and I'm aware of the Pi based emulators for the Commodore machines. If the 64 grows on me then I'll probably go that way.

    I have 2 C64s and the A1200.

I'd trade my A500 for an A1200, but the only person I know with an A1200 ain't parting with it (and I don't blame him at all).

    Howdy,

There is really no reason to not use IPv6, with dual-stack. It's just
trying to beat a dead horse and stuff it into a small box to still be
    doing Ipv4 via CGN....

I reckon they should just set a date to stop routing IPv4 and let everybody scramble to get IPv6 going.

Sure things will break, but the sun will still come up in the morning. And for those things that break, somebody will make a device that keeps them going. Most of the "core infrastructure" *should* be IPv6 ready and if not they should pull their finger out and get it working.

I've pretty much converted home to IPv6, even using DNS64 and NAT64 at home, so my dependancy on IPv4 is limited to only those site that only publish an IPv4 address.

I'm going to (eventually) turn off ipv4 dhcp and stop giving my systems IPv4 addresses - now that they all get IPv6 ones and have inbound NAT catch the inbound IPv4 stuff that goes to haproxy that channels it over IPv6. I just want my run in my NAT64 to see what breaks - and it seems to be running well now (for the last month or few).

What the *(&%$ rolling out CGN. IPv6 is supported on so many things now. What brain dead moron made that choice....

I agree with you. Our network has supported dual-stack since forever, but in the residential space having half decent IPv6 support in CPE hardware is only a relatively recent thing - and even today it's not "great".

Of course there are CPE devices that do IPv6 just fine - lower end Cisco, Mikrotik, and roll-your-own routers/firewalls - but the average oldies expect to buy a $50 device and have it just work (I'd suggest most people using BBS's are well above the "average oldie" skill level).

It's also very true that increasing the take-up of native IPv6 amongst residential users reduces the scale of the CGNAT deployment required to support those who are IPv4 only for some reason.

I had a run in with a web developer a few weeks ago that said "IPv4 is enough", until pointing out that for example, Telstra mobiles default to IPv6 and only fall back to IPv4 if they really have to.

I'm not sure Telstra even do that any more - didn't they go fully IPv6 only on the handsets, and do some sort of translation/proxying for IPv4 endpoints? I wasn't paying a lot of attention to be honest, but pretty sure they did that 6-12 months back.

Similar discussions to what you had with your web developer can be had with helpdesk managers too - "Why should we upskill the agents to understand IPv6 when IPv4 works? We have enough to do already!". Well, at some point you'll have to either upskill them on either CGNAT or IPv6, so you may as well do it right the first time.

There is really no reason to not use IPv6, with dual-stack.

In the residential space there's resistance due to the support overhead of CPE devices that don't work quite right. Heck, some very popular CPE devices struggle to get IPv4 right (we've found some BNG bugs caused by misbehaving CPE that despite being current models are still running versions of code 10+ years old).

I do wish providers (the one I work for included) would select a preferred CPE vendor and force them to straighten out their IPv6 where needed and then enable it by default. An ISP we recently acquired does IPv6 by default for residential, and I'm hoping our own brand follows their lead.

For our wholesale & enterprise customers we do dual-stack by default, and have done for years.

    That'd be entertaining :-)

I reckon one way to encourage web site owners and developers to go IPv6 would be for Google to pagerank sites with IPv6 enabled higher than IPv4 only sites.

Want better search engine rankings? Use a web server that supports IPv6!

Web hosting provider doesn't support IPv6? Find one that does!

There is the same $$$ over rulling, most isp's supply a router at no
charge to new customers, unless the customer deciced to use an existing
device. It wouldn't be to hard for them to use a better router, and
recover the costs like they do now over time. Most want a 2 year
    contract.

Yes, with a memory re-fresh. They went native IPv6, and then
proxi/translation for sites that only had IPv4. (Ala, CGN but in reverse).

Well, at some point you'll have to either upskill them on either CGNAT

The "hacked" Telstra business router (A netgear under the hood), has
support for IPv6, but the config options for it are very limiting. I
*hate* that router, but then when it's supplied to clients as part of the connection... Plus the other thing is that it's web interface is *slow*.

An ISP we recently acquired does IPv6 by default for residential, and

You're 100% right - the catch (I think) is that ISP's want to just pick something off the shelf, get a discount price for 10,000 of them, maybe get their name printed on the plastic case, and start selling.

Not too many are willing to put in the hard yards to get the IPv6 working properly - and by "hard yards" I mean telling the vendor "I'll buy 10,000 of your units, but you need to implement this, this, and this to our satisfaction first". Use the carrot to drag them into the 21st century :-)

I _think_ the Exetel guys did a fair bit of work with ZTE, but I don't know how much of that was IPv6 related vs other desirable features. I should get them to send me one to play with :-)

Internode, back before the TPG acquisition, were one of those ISP's who were willing to do the hard work to get a solution that worked properly - I remember the guys there doing a lot of work with Cisco to get the LNS platform to play nicely, and I think they did a fair bit with a couple of the CPE vendors too.

I used to be an Internode customer, until the "great Basslink fubar of 201x"...

I've never really found a good source to teach IPv6 that doesn't rely on a strong understanding of IPv4.

So for the majority of use cases, IPv6 is a hands off operation.

Your router discovers the "subnet" allocated to it.

Your router feeds the devices in your lan an IPv6 address automatically (discovery)

If you want to split your subnet up because you have multiple lans, then "smart" routers can do that too - although I must admit its a bit hit and miss sometimes (what I want, and what I get can be 2 different things).

If you want to go manual, and configure everything yourself you can - but yes, the knowledge required is higher than that of IPv4 (IMHO).

But with both IPv4 & IPv6, you take the "subnet" and the "mask" to get 1 answer - is this packet destined to somebody on my LAN, or do I need to give it to another router (that makes the same decision)? If the packet is destined for the LAN, the kernel drops the packet on the wire with the destinations address. If it isnt, its dropped on the wire with the router's address - where the router picks it up and makes the same decision.

There is a useful tool called "ipcalc" which enables you to see what address range is "local":

    ╰─$ ipcalc 10.1.0.0/24
    Address: 10.1.0.0 00001010.00000001.00000000. 00000000
    Netmask: 255.255.255.0 = 24 11111111.11111111.11111111. 00000000
    Wildcard: 0.0.0.255 00000000.00000000.00000000. 11111111

    Network: 10.1.0.0/24 00001010.00000001.00000000. 00000000
    HostMin: 10.1.0.1 00001010.00000001.00000000. 00000001
    HostMax: 10.1.0.254 00001010.00000001.00000000. 11111110
    Broadcast: 10.1.0.255 00001010.00000001.00000000. 11111111
    Hosts/Net: 254 Class A, Private Internet

    There is a similar version for IPv6 - but I use https://www.vultr.com/resources/subnet-calculator-ipv6/

So, apparently, my router has IPV6 turned on, and is receiving an IPV6

I haven't gotten it working yet, my understanding was that Comcast wasn't rolling out IPV6 yet.

So, apparently, my router has IPV6 turned on, and is receiving an IPV6 address from my ISP. One of the people on the Fido IPV6 echo scanned my address and let me know!

I haven't gotten it working yet, my understanding was that Comcast wasn't rolling out IPV6 yet.

    Sounds like they might be.

If you router has an IPv6 address, do the devices on your LAN also have one?

Sadly as somebody said once somewhere, many ISPs are playing, testing IPv6 and in some cases have rolled it out, but end users dont know and their CPE cant handle it if they do...
