It was a similar situation when we moved into our current neighbourhood, the newer areas had fibre direct to the home while on my street (still
new, but not new enough) has DSL & cable connections. It's been 10
years and they still haven't brought fibre direct to our house yet.
It's not really a big concern though as we have the cable internet and
get gigabit down (w/ 30Mb up), but symmetrical gigabit would be pretty sweet.

I didn't realize it when I set up my board. I used to run a bbs

QWK RetroNet which she is usually pretty easy to get in touch with but

around with that. I have a C64 I'm just about to play with - never had one as a kid - just fixing the PSU on that one. Once it's working I'll have to see if one of the floppy drives works...

I've never really understood what QWK is, or what you'd actually need it for, but this link may well provide me with a way in - I was toying with the idea of removing QWK from my system altogether.
Another thing to learn and tinker with :)
Hey guys, I just went through the setup and as it turned out ended up chatting with Digital Man the sysop of Vertrauen and I believe the owner of DOVE-Net...
I caught the end of that one - was an interesting read.
I guess my favourite retro machines are the BBC's, for no other reason than they are what we had at school and what I used most back then.
These days I'm interested in exploring pretty much anything 8-bit - I picked up an SVI-328 maybe 6 months back and have had some fun poking around with that. I have a C64 I'm just about to play with - never had one as a kid - just fixing the PSU on that one. Once it's working I'll have to see if one of the floppy drives works...
Beyond 8-bits I've got a couple of Atari ST's and an Amiga 500.
Yes, Digital Man is the sysop of Vertrauen, as well as the owner of DOVE-Net. He's also the main author of Synchronet BBS software (Deuce
has also contributed a lot to Synchronet).
Added Node 3/172 d0p3.intersrv.net BBS (AUS) welcome aboard to sysop

Just have a look at the echo FSX_RETRO :)
And concerning other networks, there is also WeedNet, if you would
like to talk about anything hemp related :)
Check out Adrian's Digital Basement on YouTube. He does tons of C64 troubleshooting videos. He can help guide you on those 1541s also.
Well I can tell you not to waste your time with floppies. There is an emulator software for the PI. Thats the way to go. You can just
emulate the drive and use the TOSEC. I think its up to 5000 plus images for the C64. I also have one for the AMIGA 1200 I have. Floppy
emulators were a must have for any retro nerd.
I have 2 C64s and the A1200.
And concerning other networks, there is also WeedNet, if you would

That'd be network 420, yeah?
Not really my thing, but I'll keep it in mind in case anyone asks
:-)
I've been in fido for some time:
1990-1998 & 2007-Now
OK, so you'll be the Stephen Walsh I remember then :-) I started in
either 1988 or 1989, and probably shut down around the mid-90's - I
was renting and moving around a bit, and obviously changing phone
numbers as I moved around was disruptive to users and expensive.
Just have a look at the echo FSX_RETRO :)
I do carry that one, although it's kinda quiet right now.
Even though we don't have "phone numbers" systems still move around a
bit. %-)
Now it's a matter of a stable internet connection, and without CGN in the way....
Do a netmail to areafix to rescan the area or any others you want.
Now it's a matter of a stable internet connection, and without
CGN in the way....
Yeah, CGN... We're about to roll that for our residential services,
but it won't apply to existing customers, and it'll be easy enough to opt-out of. If only IPv6 had got more traction sooner.
Do a netmail to areafix to rescan the area or any others you
want.
Did that when I first connected to the net - just hasn't been much
activity in recent days is what I was meaning. Plenty of historical conversation :-)
There is really no reason to not use IPv6, with dual-stack. It's just
trying to beat a dead horse and stuff it into a small box to still be
doing Ipv4 via CGN....
What the *(&%$ rolling out CGN. IPv6 is supported on so many things now. What brain dead moron made that choice....
I had a run in with a web developer a few weeks ago that said "IPv4 is enough", until pointing out that for example, Telstra mobiles default to IPv6 and only fall back to IPv4 if they really have to.
There is really no reason to not use IPv6, with dual-stack.
Writing the documentation of any project is the hardest part, and the
most boring. Working on the project is so much more fun.... #-)
I reckon they should just set a date to stop routing IPv4 and let everybody scramble to get IPv6 going.
What the *(&%$ rolling out CGN. IPv6 is supported on so many

I agree with you. Our network has supported dual-stack since forever,
but in the residential space having half decent IPv6 support in CPE
hardware is only a relatively recent thing - and even today it's not "great".
Of course there are CPE devices that do IPv6 just fine - lower end
Cisco, Mikrotik, and roll-your-own routers/firewalls - but the average oldies expect to buy a $50 device and have it just work (I'd suggest
most people using BBS's are well above the "average oldie" skill
"IPv4 is enough", until pointing out that for example, Telstra
mobiles default to IPv6 and only fall back to IPv4 if they really
have to.
I'm not sure Telstra even do that any more - didn't they go fully IPv6
only on the handsets, and do some sort of translation/proxying for
IPv4 endpoints? I wasn't paying a lot of attention to be honest, but
pretty sure they did that 6-12 months back.
Well, at some point you'll have to either upskill them on either CGNAT
or IPv6, so you may as well do it right the first time.
There is really no reason to not use IPv6, with dual-stack.
In the residential space there's resistance due to the support
overhead of CPE devices that don't work quite right. Heck, some very popular CPE devices struggle to get IPv4 right (we've found some BNG
bugs caused by misbehaving CPE that despite being current models are
still running versions of code 10+ years old).
An ISP we recently acquired does IPv6 by default for residential, and
I'm hoping our own brand follows their lead.
There is the same $$$ over rulling, most isp's supply a router at no charge to new customers, unless the customer deciced to use an existing device. It wouldn't be to hard for them to use a better router, and recover the costs like they do now over time. Most want a 2 year
contract.

That's why I went with internode when moving home four years ago. Native IPv6, and vie the NBN Fixed-Wireless.
I reckon they should just set a date to stop routing IPv4 and let everybody scramble to get IPv6 going.
I reckon they should just set a date to stop routing IPv4 and let everybody scramble to get IPv6 going.
Probably the best choice... But I have never been able to wrap my brain around IPV6. I even struggle with subnetting in IPV4.
I've never really found a good source to teach IPv6 that doesn't rely on a strong understanding of IPv4.
deon wrote to 2twisty <=-
So for the majority of use cases, IPv6 is a hands off operation.
Your router discovers the "subnet" allocated to it.
Your router feeds the devices in your lan an IPv6 address automatically (discovery)
So, apparently, my router has IPV6 turned on, and is receiving an IPV6 address from my ISP. One of the people on the Fido IPV6 echo scanned my address and let me know!
I haven't gotten it working yet, my understanding was that Comcast wasn't rolling out IPV6 yet.
