• fsxNet mail moves so fast!

From AKAcastor@21:1/162 to All on Sunday, March 31, 2024 23:52:18
I just want to take a moment to say that fsxNet mail travels so fast it's wonderful. The modern era of BBSing where always-on internet is ubiquitous has some perks!

I was still calling long distance for mail when I ran a BBS in the 90s, so one pickup in the middle of the night was all I did. Anyway back then the echoes moved much slower than today.

It's a joy to be able to check into the BBS at different times of the day and find new messages to read.

Thanks to Avon and all the long-timers for keeping things running and also improving along the way!

    Hi Chris.

Thanks for the kind feedback and for equally being active in fsx.. yes it's certainly a bit quicker these days when messages bounce around the globe via TCPIP than the dial up days.

I'm hoping that the migration of the NET 4 hub has gone smoothly for most, I plan to work on getting some stats reports running soon and then can use those to update the nodelist on which nodes are still active etc.in that NET.

Monday night here as I type this reply, back to work tomorrow after the Easter break. Roll on the weekend :-)

    Best, Paul

    It is uncanny isn't it!
Like I post stuff to fsx from another BBS and I'll think Oh I need to do something to mine and I'll bop over here and voila here it is!
I was just writing about HF packet radio BBS and at 300bps +- atmospheric conditions it could be really hairy affair getting the smallest text messages through!

This is robust and practical in every way here!

A couple of times it's given me an odd feeling - like waitaminute, the pace of things on BBSes was slow, I thought! Round trip of ~2 minutes on messages is incredible. (for example clrghz test replies)

Now we're chatting in absolute luxury on fsxNet! :)

Though, there is an undeniable coolness factor to HF packet radio!

I do really enjoy how truly 'authentic' your BBS feels, Roon, running OS/2 on a Pentium and your other nice touches around the system - it does feel more 'true' to my memory than many others.

You don't know the half of it!!! When I first got on fsxNet back in 2018 I was brand new to Mystic BBS, having not run a BBS since 1996. I was lost with this software.. So one night I asked a question in the Mystic echo, Avon replied and I had the response within 5 minutes! Then Al replied, and we all were going back and forth just about in real time. It was so wild, Avon is on the other side of the world from me, Al is up in Canada somewhere. What used to take days to get I was getting responses in minutes! LOL

Agree - fsxNet was one of the first things I found when I came back to BBSing, and as you said FTNs are much different from the FidoNet days. I remember knowing how many hours/days netmail would take to reach different friends that I'd write to depending on where they were in the world. :P

I like the speed and have all my settings to CRASH, so the BBS exports and sends away within 20 secs of me hitting save, at times it's nice to come back within a few minutes and have a reply. Some chats I have had over the years have been global in nature and kind of near real time, if you allow for a gap of 2-4 mins between post and response. That always gives me a buzz :)

I recall in the 90's a number of local FTN networks in the city I was living, and then there were networks like Demimonde, RGSNet (Renegade Support Network), of course Fidonet etc... I mostly read and posted to echomail but did do some limited netmails often to local sysops etc... but it always felt then (as it does now) to be a fairly quick thing to post something, come back next day or two and read some replies.

But with TCP/IP traffic these days it can be minutes now instead of days depending on if you strike it right with whomever is reading the echomail areas around the globe.

When I first started out, it felt like it would take one day per hop. I
used Zone Mail Hour at first, when I ran Opus. I'd send it up to my hub overnight, my hub would send it to the echomail coordinator, who moved
the mail overnight to one of the star sites, and the process would
reverse. Sometimes, if the person didn't quote, I'd forget what we were
    arguing about!

Crashmail improved things, I could crash mail to my hub as soon as I was
    ready.

When I got my first FTP FTN feed, I was in heaven - I could poll hourly,
for free! Unfortunately, by that time, 1997 or so, Fido networks were on
    the decline.

My first incarnation of realitycheckBBS ran Telegard on an IBM AT. Telegard didn't have a tosser that could handle pkts back then, to I had to use qmail to toss packets to *.msg files, then Telegard could toss those into the message base.

All this was happening on a 32 megabyte hard drive, which would occasionally fill up during mail runs.

I could toss one message from pkt to *.msg in about second, and it took another second to toss it from *.msg into Telegard. Nightly mail runs meant hearing a full-height 5 1/4" drive churning away for an hour or more. Modern garbage disposals are quieter. :)

Never did FTP for FTN but did find some software when I first returned to the scene that offered FTN via email file attachments. This made me giggle.

Yep, I did that in the early 1990's. I was running a board where FTN was
not native so it was an extra challenge. I think it went something like
    this:

Waffle <-> Fredmail <-> Squish <-> Fidogate <-> My Board

"Fidogate" in this case was the "tosser" that ran in between the FTN
tosser and my board which converted *.msg files into the board's message
    bases.

Then someone wrote a package for GT Power that would replace the Waffle callouts to the Usenet provider, and that IIRC also replaced the Fredmail-Squish-Fidogate part. Made things a lot easier.

Agreed! Still being focused on the content without all that "ubiquitous" UX of today's era is rare beyond measure and most likely underestimated by all who never experienced text terminal pre-Internet connectivity before... or at least Internet USENET in the times of downloading all subscribed lists offline, to respond to them next day with a proper upload batch like QWK I have had to relearn as post revolutionary prerequisite to all I knew as Internet 30 years ago....
