The reason Black Friday is a whole week plus a Monday, is due to how
many people have died as a result.

I worked for a retailer for 20 years and the actual reason "Black Friday" is more like "Black November" is simply profits. People only have so much money to spend. The sooner you get their money, the better. Otherwise they will have spent it someplace else and you don't get any.

I think this also plays a part but no insurance company wants the mess that is black Friday lawsuits either. Win win for the retailers

True. I only spent one year in retail (1987-88!) and can attest that the busiest the store was during the Thanksgiving-New Year period was the
weekend after Thanksgiving ("Black Friday") and then again not long before Christmas (last minute shoppers).

The rest of the time it was only busier-enough than "normal" days to be noticed... no big crowds.

Now the nearby Malls seemed to stay packed enough during the whole season
to need extra traffic direction, but the stand alone box stores like I
    worked in did not.

... Gone crazy, be back later, please leave message.
