• BRE Clock Tampered With

From Dumas Walker@21:1/175 to ALL on Saturday, October 07, 2023 09:47:00
I am having an issue with my BRE L21 game. It is also happening with
another BRE interbbs game I have running.

When the door is opened, it shows a message about clock tampering and then closes down. Normally when this happens it means I have an issue with the clocks being out of sync between DOS, the VM it runs in, and the machine
the VM is running on. Once I fix that, the message goes away.

In this case, all three clocks are still in sync. Does anyone have any
    other suggestions? Thanks!

Usually the hypervisor is the clock master, but most Windows and Linux VMs will have NTP enabled for time synchronization.

I would disable NTP in the VM completely, and make sure you have VMware Tools installed to take upstream time. Any VM maintenance activities like snapshots, restores and migrations will momentarily stop the VMs clock.

High I/O, memory usage on the hypervisor and swappiness can cause this as well.

In the past I've encountered TLS negotiation issues because of this, and you'll typically notice other problems with clock skew.

Thanks. All the clocks appear to be in sync this time.

For whatever reason, today the BRE interbbs games are both working fine.
Maybe I just picked a bad time to try to play them.

I actually figured it out later. The VM for my telnet nodes was in sync
with the host system and server, but I noticed that my dial-up node had
somehow got set to an hour ahead.

They are all back in sync now, so hopefully that'll fix the issue. I don't know why I didn't think to check that node initially.

    Thanks!
