Home Automtion, who's doing it and what are you using for the hub?

I'm doing very little, at this point; I supported a Kickstarter for Fingerbot, and got a few addons. End result is that currently I'm using their Smart Gateway, which I have plugged into the back of my computer (not for any computer reason; just for power via USB), and an Android app.

And I have three Zigbee devices connected. Two temperature sensors, and one Fingerbot.

The Fingerbot is taped onto my NAS, so that I can hit a button on my phone to cause it to hit the power button on my NAS.

Which is super convenient, as generally I don't have a need for the NAS to be actively running, but either I'm not at home, or too lazy to worm my way out of my beanbag chair and find the hard-to-reach button.

But eventually I'd like to add lights. I think Philips Hue stuff will work with this gateway, so solid chance I'll add something like that before too long.

I don't have any significant home automation; the closest thing I have is a smart power outlet plugged into the wall for my living room lamp. It lets me turn power on/off for the lamp using a mobile app; their mobile app also lets you configure a time schedule to turn it on/off, including time of day or events such as sunrise/sunset. Currently I have it configured to turn the lamp on at sunset, then off at 10:15PM (with the 'off' time only Sunday-Thursday). The smart outlet can also be added as an Amazon Echo skill, and I have it set up as such, so I can ask Alexa to turn it on/off.

I've fallen out of programming for my setup, but I do have some old Node Red routines all running under Home Assistant on a 'Home Assitant Blue' - which is just an Odroid N2 SBC...

With the new matter protocol, you can get really far with Apple's HomeKit these days... even hardware that isn't supported can sometimes be added - its a lot better than it was 5 years ago.

Home Assistant for AUTOMATION, HomeKit for smart devices...

I saw that fingerbot thing - very neat as some things ARE physical in this w0rld...

I use Hue and I've been really happy with them - they are the most expensive way to get into smart lights, but they offer the most features, too... many sensors and add-ons that LifX just doesn't have. (Too bad, too - as I prefer LifX's NO-HUB approach... I ust need motion and temp sensors...) Another cost-effective brand to check out is Govee - cheap and compatibile with all the big dogs... altho, I haven't seen their actual app - I use Home Assistant+HomeKit so I normally don't use devices apps..

Interesting, I need to do more reading on matter.

I just migrated from HomeSeer to Home Assistant and have been testing for the last couple weeks. So far, everything has been running.

Do you need a hub? I don't use any myself, I have a friend using it for lighting, mostly plug in modules with lamps, and some odd globes in regular light fittings.

To truly automate you need something doing the automations.

Automations to me is no user interaction after it's setup.

Its neat - and is supposed to be the new protocol everyone should use... but you know how that goes.

I much prefer Home Assistant, and I think you'll like using it too... since they added 'blueprints', its super easy adding hardware. I also still like to use the add-on 'Node-Red' for coding - lets you use those... I ferget what they're called, but you use squares/circles and lines drawn between them to do things... its powerful, but less needed w/ all the additions HA has made over the past 18mos.

It's been good so far, but I spun HomeSeer backup since HA is having issues with the MyQ plugin. Homeseer is still working, and I need control of my garage door.

I'm sorta on the fence right now, considering just spinning up NodeRed to get the few items I don't have with HS that I get with HA.

    Hello,
I have a lot of smart devices but no centralized hub. I do have some things hooked into Alexa but most things i use the included app or Alexa. Kinda messy but it works for me. I messed with Home Assistant but most of my things didnt work well with that server. I still have it installed just in case that changes as people are always developing for Home Assistant.

I'm aware and using it. There has been a problem with this integration for the last few days for many people.

If you install the HASSO version, it seems pretty stable so far.
