Welllllll.... I do not have your or their confidence in makemkv. I got it compiled and poped one of the disks in question in. It has been working on
it for about 1:45. The "time remaining" to scan the contents is now up
over 43 *hours*. I am going to let it continue overnight, but I suspect it will be up over 100 hours by morning.

The disk cover says "THIS DISK IS EXPECTED TO PLAY BACK IN DVD VIDEO "PLAY ONLY" DEVICES, AND MAY NOT PLAY IN OTHER DVD DEVICES... INCLUDING PC
DRIVES." As I noted in past I was able to get Handbrake to find the advertising and "extras" titles on the disks, but not the actual episodes.
I suspect they've come up with something beyond encryption and actually have something on the disk that prevents PC DVD Drives from being able to read
    them.

As a side note, it looks like MakeMKV has not been updated since 2010. The disks I have found that have this message on them are about 10 years newer
    than that.

I think DVD Shrink and MakeMKV are like apples & oranges. DVD Shrink produces an ISO (which you can then burn to a DVD-R), whereas MakeMKV outputs a .mkv video file that you can play directly.

The bad news is that the time remaining did, as predicted, continue to go
up overnight. The good news is that one of my two DVD sets that contains
that disclaimer actually does work on the PC, so I should be able to make a digital copy of it.

I've found DVD Shrink to be a fairly useful program (and it's very easy to use). It's one of those Windows apps that I'd be tempted to run with Wine or something in another OS if possible, if I wanted to use it.

I might try that if I really get to wanting a digital copy of that one, or
if I start having troubles with more disks more often. My experience with
wine (which is not recent experience) is that programs which do simple
tasks, like text editing or image viewing, run fine, but ones that do more complicated things (like accessing peripherals, like a DVD drive, USB ports, etc.) are not likely to work too well.

Correct, a digital copy that does not require a special player to watch it.

Is it bluray or dvd? I've found there are some discs that are just not working right in PC rips... If you're using windows, there's also
ANYDVD-HD as another option, can use it with handbrake. I've found

Yeah, copy-protection schemes can get *VERY* interesting to say the elast.

I suspect they've come up with something beyond encryption and
actually have something on the disk that prevents PC DVD Drives from
    being able to read them.

They'll play games with actual sector data printing the discs... this
isn't a problem for actual players that just go where the device media
tells it to go, but it's harder for computers trying to read the whole
    thing.
