• Nuked from Orbit

So I nuked my system to get rid of the crypto miner that was squatting and I could not get rid of. He's gone, I'm happy.

Restoring my system... where's my data folder?!

So yeah, board looking a little barren now. Most everything is coming back to life, but gonna have to figure out how to get my old board data back.

Worse case I think I still have my WinXP copy of SBBS somewhere. Could restore those older files, and re-poll all the board echo's.

...right after I make a proper backup script.

You didn't do a backup of your /sbbs directory before nuking the system?

Yeah that would be a good idea, although you don't actually need a
script. Just copy the directory somewhere.

I know right? simple tar czf data command and for some reason I either forgot or something didn't sync correctly. It was a horrible oversight. I REALLY am not losing much other than some history, most of the message echos can be polled again from vert or my NC, so I'm NOT that upset. Losing my userbase was a blow, so I'm hoping I can find my WinXP data folder. It'll be a few years old, but at least I can restore SOME of it.

Why risk it? I made a cron job that backs up daily, weekly, monthly and annually to my cloud drive and local NAS. Was easy, and now it runs automatically. I can set it up to ping my cell phone or post to my Discord when it fails to complete.

Well, yeah, OK... But you didn't think to do that before you "nuked
your system"? Doesn't make much sense to me.

Me either, but here we are. So I'm not the best system admin, at least my crypto issues are gone (so far).

Which data folder are you referring to? Linux user data folder? That's normally in /home/<your-username>
In Windows, it's normally in C:\Users\<your-username>

Was being facitious, I forgot to back it up like a tool, so yeah, /sbbs/data, gone. Not a BIG deal, but my userbase is gone which is sad. I'm tempted to pull apart my old system which is dead, spin up the drives and see if I can find my old data files. They are on a Virtualbox HD image somewhere. I'm pretty sure I could easily extract the files with a little patience. In the meantime my board is on an odd port now shodanscore.com:8086 (telnet). I think ssh is still blocked, but I'm debating opening it back up. Webv4 is working at https://bbs.shodanscore.com.

I need to time travel so I can find some time to work on it without sacrificing my other time.

That is correct. It doesn't make *any* sense, actually.
