Old school but fun to mess around with. I still have my 386 stored away and have been getting the itch to break it out....

I keep a 486 under my desk that has Win XP on it. I use it to run my old Willem EPROM burner.

I'd think a 486 might be a bit slow to run Windows XP.. Windows XP came out in 2001, which is Pentium 2 era.

Some applications for Windows XP SP3 not working even on Pentium III, because there's not SSE2 commands extension. :)

Well... It's been running at least since 2000 (and probably before that - that's just the oldest screenshot I have of it running.) It ran my old Atari BBS for many years. I retired it from the BBS around 2020.

Now you've piqued my interest... Because I know the machine under the desk is running Win XP and I have a screenshot of it running my BBS in 2000. However it is possible that I have mistaken the 486 I have in storage for this machine (after all, they are both white.) Maybe this machine under the desk could be a Pentium. When I get a free moment, I will pull it out and see...

what are the specs of this 486?
    i'm pretty sure a 486 can't meet min requirements.

That seems unlikely, since Windows XP was released in October 2001.

You may be right. I may be confusing it with another system I have in storage.

At any rate, I have to finish a customer's PLC system I had to setup in my lab yesterday and cycle it out of here before I will have room to set up the PC... but I will get to it in the next day or two.

Not to restart an old thread... but I did manage to get my two 486's out of storage for testing... one has a bad video card, so the next time I would have needed to use my Willem, I would not have been able to. (New one on order - be here today).

Turns out... everyone was correct, except for me.

    What I thought were 2 486's were actually 2 Pentium 4's

    oops...
    sorry about that...
